In a recent thread titled, "Should the ODP/DMOZ Use NoFollow Tags" at WebmasterWorld, a very interesting question was raised by the members. After a lot of useless submissions overwhelming the editors at DMOZ, will the inclusion of nofollow will stop these superfluous submissions and make the editors' lives easier?

Most of the members think that it won't, as Nofollow doesn't even stop spammers. It is not yet clear, as why would DMOZ, which purports to be a quality directory, wants to work with nofollow.

One of the member stated that, " nofollow is for links the site owner does not trust. At the moment a site link is added to DMOZ, the site clearly is trusted — otherwise it would not be added. No obvious case there, either."

Even the moderator pageoneresults says "Human Edited content should not require use of the nofollow attribute."

There are some users, who disagree on this statement. They raise the question that "What if a site that was included in DMOZ deteriorates in quality over time? Human edited content works for one time only unless there is a constant review of sites. Old links may lose trust.

A few possible solutions are proposed by the members, like:

• A system of checks and balances with multiple editors within a specific category
• Ability for the average user to flag inappropriate results

DMOZ Launches Its First Ever Blog

Just yesterday, the DMOZ homepage was missing from SERPs and now DMOZ launches its blog. The purpose of this blog is to

Bob Keating,Managing Editor of DMOZ: "What do you think about DMOZ? Why do you use the directory or data? Is there something you would like to see fixed? When you've been around as long as we have, some people are bound to have great things to say, while others might have a few choice words based on their personal experience. Either way, we want to hear it ".

Official Launch Of DMOZ Blog: Source For Information, Insight & Updates Of DMOZ

Business.com Could Hit Jackpot on Auction Block, reports the Wall Street Journal in reference to the domain going on sale for a possible sum of anywhere between $400-$500 million.

Back in 1999, when entrepreneurs Sky Dayton and Jake Winebaum bought the domain name, for the then highest ever price (for a domain name) of $7.5 million, they were laughed at. The tide surely has changed with the domain's current price.

"The company that grew out of business.com — a search engine used by businesses to find products and services — is now on the auction block, and could fetch anywhere between $300 million and $400 million, according to people familiar with the matter. Their interest shows how, well into the Internet age, media companies are still eager for properties that can deliver online revenue and growth. Business.com, Santa Monica, Calif., has 2007 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of about $15 million, the people familiar with the matter said, with its online traffic growing by 50% in the first quarter of 2007, compared with the year earlier."

Reports suggest big media companies like Dow Jones and New York Times are interested in the purchase though reps of both companies still remain tight-lipped.

Sky Dayton will continue as director while Jake Winebaum as Business.com's Chief Executive. International financial services group, Credit Suisse will be managing the sale.

Business.com Goes Under The Hammer, Bidding Starts at $400 Million!

Barry Schwartz has pointed to a thread at Search Engine Watch Forums where an aggrieved website owner has complained of hijacking. The owner of www.wenlockbasin.com has reported that his website just disappeared from the search results, even when searched with the domain name. The directory Hotfrogs replaced the site in the SERPs of Google.

As moderator Mcanerin explained:

Hotfrog appears to link to websites using a redirection script issuing a 302 redirect. For new/low ranking sites, this can result in what is called a "hijack".

This can happen because a 302 actually tells a search engine that the original site is HotFrog and that it has been temporarily moved to your URL. Accordingly, the search engine shows the "original" if it has enough link juice.

UK Directory Hotfrog Hijacks Site With 302 Redirect: Google Exploited

There is good news for all the webmasters and SEO firms as they can again submit their site to DMOZ. For the past four months dmoz was on a hiatus. dmoz is the largest human edited directory of the web. DMOZ had previously suffered tarnished reputation as its editors have often been charged of showing favoritism and do not take sites who are in competition to their sites. However, a DMOZ listing stilll holds value as Google and some other search engines show some results from the DMOZ directory.

In October 2006, the editors and submissions were cut off at the directory. On 18th December, the editors started processing older submissions and though they could log in but sites could not be submitted by the webmasters. But now the work has resumed at DMOZ with editors processing the submissions and directory is taking submissions in its web directory. Submitting your site at DMOZ holds lot of advantages as the submissions are free, your ranks can improve in search engines and can drive more traffic to the site.
