Google is getting serious about optimizing its own product sites. The new *Google SEO Report Card* is an extensive analysis of more than 100 main pages of Google products.

The report is the outcome of an internal exercise to improve these pages from both search engines and user’s perspective. Google has made the report public hoping that companies and webmasters will learn from it. The report provides suggestions and examples for fixing the issues, which range from broken links and URL structure to titles/metas and on-page content.

The project looked at the main pages of 100 different Google products, measuring them across a dozen common optimization categories. Future iterations of the project might look at deeper Google product web pages as well as international ones./

Now Get Your SEO Report Card From Google!

In a recent Google Webmaster Blog post, a detailed information is given about how comment spamming can lower the rankings of any website in particular.

When someone posts a comment that is both irrelevant and posted just to pass the link so as to increase the number of inbound links to their website in particular, the rankings of both the sites will get affected in the process. This is applicable for those comments only that hold no relevance to the post and are completely unnecessary.

If you think a suspicious link has come from blogs and other platforms, you should check the URLs. In case you have created a spammy link, delete it or contact the webmaster to get it removed. After deleting the spammy inbound links, you can send a reconsideration request at Google Webmaster support. If you own a site that receives lot of comment spams daily, here are a few things you should do:

•  Disallow all the anonymous postings.
• Turn on the comment moderation option.
• Disallow all the hyperlinks in comments.
• You should CAPTCHAs and other methods for preventing automated comment spamming.
• Use robots.txt or meta tags for blocking comment pages.
• You can also use “nofollow” attribute for linking in comment field.

It is harsh but true that SEO cannot be everyone's cup of tea. Still you will find a large number of SEO companies sprouting up in every corner of the street. The ratio is much larger in India because many foreign companies outsource their work to Indian SEO firms either due to cheaper prices or better services.

With such a large business dropping in, people are tend to give a thought to acquire SEO skills and earn a lot of money. But, how to go about it? Is there any special course that one should do to become a good search engine optimizer?

Well! It is quite disturbing to say that most of the people calling themselves “experienced Search engine optimizers” don't have the right knowledge about the process. They follow the cliched SEO tactics that have flooded the World Wide Web. It is good to read about the process but only when the information you get is right.

After you have learned the skills, its time to practice individually. You can administer at least five websites to develop theories and to test them on various parameter. Keep a track of the results and note down the changes in the indexing of your sites on search engines. So, be true to the profession you have chosen for yourself and success will come to you.

SEOmoz has released its latest Search Engine Ranking Factors report which gives an idea on how SEO works in 2009. A total of seventy-two SEOs participated in SEOmoz's survey that involved ranking possible factors used by Google while ranking websites, as well as a variety of questions pertaining current SEO trends and topics. The survey was completed earlier this year. The survey compiled the following as the top five ranking factors:

• Anchor Text from External Links
• Keyword Use in Title Tag
• Raw Link Popularity
• Diversity of Linking Domains
• Keyword Use in Root Domain

If we compared this year's list to that of 2007 survey by SEOmoz, it will come clear that the first three factors remain unchanged, however, the order is changed. The top five ranking factors in 2007 were:

• Keyword Use in Title Tag
• Global Link Popularity of Site (”Raw Link Popularity” above)
• Anchor Text of Inbound Links (”Anchor Text from External Links” above)
• Link Popularity within the Site’s Internal Link Structure
• Age of Site

Search Ranking Factors For 2009 Indicates Little Change In SEO

In the presentation, Cutts said that there is nothing wrong in putting keywords in URLs. In fact, if you want to rank better for alternatives to the title of your page, then it is necessary to put the keyword in the URL.

Learn How To SEO For Adobe PDF Documents

In the present times, we can rightly say that the business world is dominated by the internet. Various reports suggest that most of the users resort to search engines for help when searching for some information. Therefore, it is important that your website is in a good position in the search engine result page (SERP).

Here's a list of common SEO errors that most businesses make during the website designing phase:

1. Keyword Stuffing

   It was first reported in the early 1990s that it helped achieve number one spot in Google. However Keyword stuffing your metadata is not only against Google's guidelines but also increases unnecessary traffic flow to your website. Therefore, when you decide keyword, make sure they are relevant to your website's content. It is essential that the content is written based on the readers and not the search engines. You will be penalized if your website is found over optimized.

2. Splash Pages

   It is the first page that a user views when he/she logs onto your website. These pages are normally Flash object with a “click here to skip” button or a large static graphic that occupies most of the screen's space with a “continue” button. One of the reasons why these pages don't work is because they are not optimized for search engines to crawl. It contains little content for search engines to index, so it's considered of little interest and ranked highly.

   Therefore, if you need a splash page for your website make sure they are optimized correctly with text and graphics for the search engines to read and index.

3. ALT tag

   This tag was designed specifically as an alternative to an image. This helps with usability especially for the visually impaired. You can also use this tag to index your pictures correctly. Most of the search engines provide an “image” search facility, which acts as an important source of traffic to sites. Keep in mind that if your products have been indexed and tagged properly then image search could act as another source of revenue for your site.

4. Flash Websites

   These websites have a great look, with moving images, sliding navigation and sleek designs. However, most search engines don't prefer them, as they can't view the text given within a Flash object and so can't index your content. In order to make Flash objects more search engine friendly, Adobe, Google and Yahoo have recently introduced “SEO Technology Center for Flash” to improve search engine ranking for Flash based websites. Adobe still recommends an HTML version for websites.

5. Duplicate Content

   If the content in your website is duplicate then you can be heavily penalized by Google. E-commerce sites generally have duplicate content, as a store selling the same products may have similar content. These sites have access to product feeds to such websites, which they will either upload or copy & paste from other websites. In order that the search engines have fresh and unique content to index ensure to write original content.

6. Purchase of SEO Programmes

   Most SEO websites promise to offer number one position to your site in Google. Since their main aim is to get your URL and a small amount of money. But it is impossible and have a negative impact on your site as many of the techniques applied could be ‘Black Hat’. Applying such techniques on your website could get you blacklisted by Google.

7. Competitors Links

   With so many websites around and proving to your customers that you have the best products, you may be tempted to link to your competitor’s products or website to get a “vote,” which Google views as a recommendation. Remember, if your website haS high quality relevant links, the more of a trusted source you become which will improve your search engine rankings.

8. Link Farming/Link Spamming

   You may have come across many advertisements, which offer the option to submit your website to hundreds of directories. One of the major threats of link farm websites is that they have content of low quality and treated as spam by Google.

9. Non-utilization of Meta
   
   Every page in a website has three main areas were you can include content to, such as the TITLE tag, DESCRIPTION tag and the KEYWORDS tag. To ensure that your site is search engine friendly it is important to write each tag correctly. However, your site can be punished if found with tags stuffed with keywords that are irrelevant to your website.
10. Never Avoid Google Guidelines

    Finally, be aware of any changes made to the Google Webmaster Guidelines.Google constantly changes its search engine algorithm and any failure to these guidelines will affect your website's rankings.

Google's Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide Now Available in 40 Languages!

When a client hire’s an SEO company, the sole motive is to boost their website traffic and improve its search engine rankings. But at times there are certain things they end up doing, unknowingly, which can negatively affect their website’s performance and wreck the SEO consultant’s efforts. For instance, they might change the website's navigation structure or the meta tags or even change the core website content, all this can seriously affect the search engine ranking of their website.

I thought it will be nice to have a list of things that the clients are “not supposed to do”, when the SEO process is on.

Some of the things “not to be done” by clients, while getting their websites, search engine optimized are:

1. Host change: The website's host location must not be changed without informing your SEO company.
2. Spam: The client must ensure that their site is not involved in any spamming activities like antisocial, email flooding, hacking etc.
3. Forgetting to renew the domain or hosting of their site: Downtime, which means the period for which the website doesn't function, or shows an error message; can lead to the site getting dropped from Google's index.  Typical errors are if the website's hosting or domain is not renewed, server is down for 3-4 days at length. So always host with a solid hosting company with atleast 99.9% uptime guarantee and have domain renewed for atleast 2-3 years.
4. Altering navigation structure: If  the navigation structure is altered without approval by the SEO company, then also the website's performance will get affected. (for example javascript  or flash menus)
5. Content or title/meta tags changes: If the content or meta tags are changed without any knowledge to the SEO company, then the website may not give expected results.
6. Virus or malware: If the website is attacked by a virus or malware and has been caught by Google, then there is a high chance of getting the website blacklisted. 
7. Duplicate content: If your website has some content, copy pasted from somewhere on internet, even if it's a micro- site for additional marketing, then it can wreck SEO company's efforts by getting a duplicate content penalty.

Here are some of the key points on the topic:

• Domain Trust/Authority – Until the Florida update (November of 2003), not many SEOs took this factor seriously. Today, it has become one of the most dominant factors in the success of rankings at Google. However, it doesn't mean that exact-match domain names and lots of anchor text from diverse root domains can't still overwhelm the occasional page from Wikipedia, Amazon or the BBC, but the preferential treatment has reached new heights.
  
  In the past few days, you may have noticed authority sites like Technorati has started re-ranking their tag pages on every SERP they target. Even the Google's "Brand" or "Vince" update also emphasize this point.
• Anchor Text in External Links – It is considered to be a very powerful ranking tactic. But, over the years it has lost its importance as it used to carry before 2004. At present, anchor text is considered to be as PageRank. Since it has a dominance in the algorithm.

• Raw PageRank / Link Juice – In the olden days, PageRank used to hold a very important place. Getting a few high PageRank links was very simple, just needed a little ranking manipulation. However, by the year 2003, PageRank started declining as a ranking factor and still continues to decline. Though, it can still make some certain difference, for inclusion in the index and comparison against duplicates & scrapers.

Changes in the Google's Ranking System Over Time

In one of his blog posts, Barry Schwartz talks about the confirmation by Google, on the same treatment of "/" and "/index.html" in the URLs. The topic has become a hot debate in the Google Webmaster Forum.

Googler, JohnMu, confirms that both "/" and "/index.html" in the home page are typically treated the same by Google. He also said that with or without these server header responses (301s, 404s, etc.) will remain the same.

However, Google will treat these headers differently only if the webpages have different content. The news has really surprised many webmasters who had no clue about them so far.

"/" and "/index.html" in URL Mean the same to Google!

Adobe recently launched the SEO Technology Center. The primary purpose of this Center is:

“Ensuring that search engines can crawl and index your rich Internet applications (RIAs)—so that your content can be found by others—is of critical importance to building and maintaining an online presence. While Adobe and the leading search engines are making significant strides in making SWF content more searchable, you can take additional steps now to improve your search ranking positions further.”

Last year, we witnessed the cooperation of Google and Yahoo with Adobe to make RIAs and web contents searchable and crawled. Keeping this view in mind, Adobe launched the SEO Technology Center. At present, the Center hosts various articles on Flash content SEO. For instance:

Adobe's Launches SEO Technology Center For RIA!

Matt Cutts never stays away from news! Recently it was all about Canonical tags and now the guy is going ga-ga on the issue of paid posts that mark their presence in the search results.

Matt Cutts is not at all in favor of paid posts that pass page ranks:

“My bottom-line recommendation is simple: paid posts should not pass PageRank. I’m not going to pay $750 to check whether the Forrester report mentions this important point.”

He further goes a step ahead and talks about taking all kinds of “serious” actions against paid posts, especially the ones that are responsible for violating the guidelines of Google.

“We do take the subject of paid posts seriously and take action on them. In fact, we recently finished going through hundreds of “empty review” reports — thank you for that feedback!”

“The paid post at the top happens to be about brain tumors, which is a really serious subject. If you are searching for information about brain cancer or radiosurgery, you probably don’t want a company buying links in an attempt to show up higher in search engines. Other paid posts might not be as starkly life-or-death, but they can still pollute the ecology of the web.”

Come on, why would a company buy links just to get higher rankings (especially when it comes to such a serious matter like brain tumor?!) And it is not just about these serious matters, Matt Cutts is strongly against all those paid posts that are responsible for violating the guidelines!

Matt Cutts On "Paid Posts!"

Now this is an astounding news! A French town “Eu” that holds hundred years of civilization (The County of Eu was created in 996 by Duke Richard I of Normandy) is planning to change its name just because it wants to have higher rankings in Google Search. How strange is that?

"As far as the Internet is concerned, we have to bring ourselves up to date." Mrs Gaouyer, the Mayor of Eu, holds her favored option in the form of “Ville d'Eu (Town of Eu)”, along with other possibilities such as Eu-le-Château and Eu-en-Normandie.

The town of “Eu” in France currently is not able to get better rankings as other similar pages related to the European Union are ranking higher. And because of this factor, the town is not able to get hold of ample amount of tourists due their poor rankings. No one is able to find this town in search engines.

Here is one recommendation for them: Hire a good SEO company folks!

Town "Eu" Planning To Change Name For Better Google Rankings

More On Canonical Link Element By Matt Cutts!

It is a known fact that the number of links to a particular website play a crucial role in deciding its position on the search engine ranking results. But, how important this is and what are the metrics used by search engine to measure it?

A search engine like Google has different “search operators” for providing essential insights to improve the search engine ranking of a page. Amongst these “Allinanchor” is the most important command that heavily influences the ranking algorithm of Google. This is done by providing relevancy to the inbound links.

Allinanchor is a search command that searches for internet pages containing inbound links with certain keywords in the anchor text.

Why is Allinanchor so important?

Allinanchor is important because it shows the list of web pages with high volume of inbound links comprising a particular keyword. We are not aware of the fact that there is a strong co-relation between the allinanchor results for a particular term and the general Google web results for that particular term.

Quality links mean a lot while counting inbound links in Google. But, you will always think that the links to your website are quality ones. So, why is it not showing up in top results? So, here are some clarifications:

As per Google, the Quality Links means:

• The older the better. The links from old domains are of high quality.
• Links from primary domains like .coms and not .info are of good quality.
• Links from high PR site with authority have high quality.
• Links from .edu and .gov sites.
• The links with a correct anchor text have high quality.

Always remember that search engines like Google always give weightage to links suggesting correct anchor text. Let's take an example. You have 10 sites linking to your site with anchor text “here”, and 5 sites with anchor text “make money online”. Your competitor has 10 sites linking with the anchor text “make money online”, and other five linked with “here”. Then your competitor is more likely to rank higher for the keyword “make money online”.

So, you must ask all the people linking to you to change their anchor text as per your keyword, rather then writing “here” and “looking for more”.

Allinanchor: (your search term)

It is clear that following an “ethical” link building strategy is important for improving a website's rank in Google. If you focus on getting inbound links to a site in a natural way, always remember that anchor text has a vital role in determining your Google ranking success. By using allinanchor, you can monitor your progress while keeping an eye on your competitors.

The Relation Between Allinanchor and Search Engine Ranking

Most businesses realize the important role, a sales page plays in conversion of visitors to customers. However very few of them know how to effectively optimize the sales page, while retaining its appeal. This article provides some guidelines on how you can woo search engines and readers of your sales copy as well.

1. Choose Headlines Wisely

When writing the sales pages, place yourself in the feet of the customer you are writing for. Think about how he/she would go about looking for a product or service online. Read your own sales pages carefully, and ensure that you have included the name of the product in your headlines. Why is this important? If the product name does not feature in the headlines, you have not optimized the site adequately. This translates into lesser traffic, due to lower search engine visibility.

2. Adding Relevant Page Titles

Web pages titled “Home” and “Welcome”, offer no value or advantage. You must make sure to choose a relevant, crisp title. Also, the product name must feature in the page title. This is one of the keys to increase traffic and sales. Most importantly, do not believe that since you are going in Internet advertising, what you write in your sales copy doesn't matter. Good titles and descriptions can make your Pay Per Click advertising much more cost-effective. Besides, you cannot afford to ignore organic search engine traffic.

3.Optimizing for Keywords

Do not just present your sales pitch or place eye-catching headlines on the sales page. Aim to incorporate relevant keywords in your page descriptions. Your descriptions must be concise, targeted for the customer profile you have in mind, and have persuasive content. It is a good idea to mention your product's USP and the advantages it offers.

4. Bold and Strong Attributes

Use your discretion in deciding which of the keywords need to be emphasized. Don’t place each keyword in bold or it would annoy readers. Try to spread them evenly through out the copy, and avoid overpopulating your page with keywords.

5. Careful Use of Images

Images can brighten up a dull sales copy, but you need to know how to make the best use of them. Try to place them one by one in each targeted paragraph and follow the image optimization techniques. Do not bundle them together, as this can affect the readability of your page.

6. Placing Links

While sales pages usually do not have too many links because they are so few in number, links greatly affect search engine visibility. To improve navigation and site optmization, add anchored links on the titles and subtitles and place a navigation menu from the top and bottom of the page.

Remember, all the effort you pour into writing a sales copy, is useless if you aren't able to attract targeted traffic on your site. So keep these tips in mind when you are developing your SEO strategy.
