So far the stark competitor to Digg, Yahoo! Buzz that was launched in February this year was available only to a handful of invited publishers who were able to post news to Buzz. The social media has emerged with a boom during the past few years. The social media sites enables a website or a blog with good content to generate traffic as well as create awareness.

RSS ad network Pheedo will announce a new service tonight – advertising widgets powered by RSS and incorporating several social media tools. Readers familiar with Techmeme’s advertising program will recognize the ideas here – companies today are producing creative content to drive visitors to their websites and that content can be leveraged explicitly as advertising. Pheedo hopes to make this approach scalable and widely deployed. The widgets can be placed on any web page and in many other ad networks.

Example of widgets are visible on the Pheedo home page. They can be populated by any RSS feed. Items in the feed are followed by buttons to tag those items in third party social bookmarking sites of the advertiser’s choice. Moreover, Video feeds can also be served up in the widget as well, but for now a linked thumbnail is displayed.

Web 2.0 Love Letter!

“If search engines were never invented or they ceased to exist tomorrow, how would you build traffic to your website in a searchless world?”

Not a pleasant question but the answer to it might open up new ways of getting high quality traffic. Brian Provost has a great post about alternate modes of attracting traffic on the internet. It is a comprehensive list some of which are very general by now, however, there are a few others which are worth the read.

The ones must of us have already followed to the hilt are link building, web directories, ad networks, press releases and syndicated content etc. Then there are some more with immense potential but not yet completely explored, such as Social Media, Podcasting and Sponsored Reviews. I am a little skeptic about podcasting as it has not quite caught on yet. But there are these little groups on the internet waiting to explode. So you can hardly ignore them.

What's most interesting about the list is the inclusion of some very new methods, such as TV Buys, Email List Rentals, Event Media Sponsorships and Streaking. If you thought many of these are simply not feasible, read the post.

Serph To Take Over Social Media Search Soon

Microsoft felt that there were some mistakes in the technical articles of Wikipedia. Consequently, the company offered cash to a blogger Rick Jelliffe for editing the article. But  paying for Wikipedia copy is not allowed as the founder Jimmy Wales and his volunteer editors, moderators and writers do not allow public-relations firms, workers or anyone else from posting  slanting or fluff  entries which can lead to conflict of interests.

Microsoft has agreed that it had taken such a step but also gives the justification that it was not able to mark the purported mistakes to the volunteer editors of Wikipedia. This lead them to take services of an  independent expert who could tell that whether changes were important and post them on the encyclopedia site. 

Spokeswoman of Microsoft  Catherine Brooker said that company had never taken services of anyone for changing any article of Wikipedia. Also the company and the blogger had not decided the sum of money and  no payment was made to Rick Jelliffe. Jelliffe works with a computing company of Australia as a chief technical officer. He said that he does not work with Microsoft but is a technical standards aficionado and only took the offer as he wanted that  technical standards processes should be described perfectly.

Microsoft Offers Cash For Correcting Wikipedia Articles

In the month of October Dave Pasternack wrote an article Troubled times for SEO firms where he critically pointed out that marketers are discovering that SEO isn't rocket science. Since this article critically backlashed so Dave has given another interview to DM News Is SEO “rocket science?”: A Q&A with Dave Pasternack.

Dave Pasternack tries to clear his stance and says, “a small percentage of readers with an inferiority complex who happen to call themselves SEO experts. The article was about the apparent demystification of the SEO field. In other words, a growing number of companies are realizing that their sites need to be designed in accordance with the basic SEO guidelines described by Google, and that this knowledge should be and is becoming incorporated as a core competence of their internal Web teams.”

He adds, “if the web team consistently follows the rules when putting up new content, then no “fixing” or “tweaking” is necessary. Plus if the content is great, with some marketing, it will get inbound links just as Larry [Paige] and Sergey [Brin] at Google calculated.”

However, it seems that many people are still not satisfied with Dave Pasternack stance. But instead of being angry like the previous time they are amused. Lee Odden in his post Good SEO Humor says, “So, ongoing SEO and link building is relegated to “great content” and “some marketing”. That’s it! That’s all you need! Wow, SEO firms and client companies world wide will be so happy to hear that. LOL

Thanks to Dave’s insight, SEO agencies can throw in the towel and clients will be successful in the natural search results purely based on “great content” and “some marketing”. Now I know why Dave’s company moved away from SEO to all PPC six years ago. The lack of results from “some marketing” must have been embarrassing!”

You must be wondering how is all this social upheaval related to linkbaiting? Well amusingly it is not the article that catches the eye of the reader. It is the last line that grabs the attention.

SEOBlackHat gives a good dose of facts coupled by his personal opinion and way in the middle of this article a reader may start having a positive opinion about the post. Slam! Unfortunately for SEOBlackHat there are many people smarter than him. Like SEOmoz has written about this post by SEOBlackHat, but instead of a trackback he has 'nofollowed' the link in his post.

Linkbaiting Tactic Unveiled

Linkbaiting has been the flavor of the season lately. While Todd, Rand and Nick have written articles on the subject, Aaron Wall is inviting ideas for linkbaiting.

I'm guessing that most of these posts that make digg are the usual "appeal to male techies of a certain age" and focus on google, digg, LED projects, laptop modifications, politics?

My site is for women 20-30 and digg seems tough to crack that way.

Is that for real? How many prime diggers are "men techies of a certain age" with specific interests? If you look at Top Digg stories there is no uniform domination of tech stories. If you have noticed any trend, then let me know.

MySpace has been beaten on the Alexa ranking front by the big video sharing website YouTube. Last year Google had acquired YouTube after which it has ended up getting more and more visitors.
