I diagree that AJAX is bad for SEO. AJAX would typically only be used in the parts of the pages which would be associated with forms anyway. As Google and other search engines cannot use forms anyway, it's not actually doing any harm here.

The better solution in my opinion would be to say 'websites should be built without javascript / AJAX first until they work, and then enhanced with AJAX'.

There are some great concepts here, but there are some relevant technologies you could add. Have a look at
http://www.demonzmedia.com/DemonzBlog/?p=12
for a discussion on these technologies.

Hey Navnet,
I think that the explosion of extreme syling with CSS and using AJAX to enhance user experiences by reducting wait is all of a sudden a new direction for the web. However, a lot of people will (and already some have) fall into the trap of overusing these new techniques. A whole site in AJAX will be in no way SEO friendly and the same in CSS as more and more tags need not be 'hard-coded' in HTML.
My summary here being - web 2.0 -
To enhance, not to replace.
