Goodbye Writely, Welcome Google Docs & Spreadsheets

Go to Writely.com and it will redirect you to http://docs.google.com/. This is because Google has launched information-sharing software, Google Docs & Spreadsheets that combines Google Spreadsheets with Writely. The beta version of the combination is available under the name of Google Docs & Spreadsheets.

Acoording to Google: "Google Docs & Spreadsheets is a web-based word processing and spreadsheet program that keeps documents current and lets the people you choose update files from their own computers. You can, for example, coordinate your student group's homework assignments, access your family to-do list from work or home, or collaborate with remote colleagues on a new business plan."

With new Google Docs & Spreadsheets you can import existing documents and spreadsheets, or create new ones, securely store your documents and spreadsheets online, invite people and make changes to your documents and spreadsheets. "The over-riding reason why people would use these is if they want to share information," said Jen Mazzon of the Google Writely team.

"Google is not targeting the desktop productivity suite market place that Microsoft dominates with Office, despite speculation that it is," said Jonathan Rochelle, Google Docs & Spreadsheets product manager. "It made sense to combine these products and people were asking for that," he said. "It doesn't change our strategy.

But it's clear that the Google apps were built  by separate teams. Little differences give it away: The collaboration function is a separate page in Docs, but a right-hand panel in Spreadsheets. Spreadsheets also has a built-in chat feature to compliment its real-time group editing capability. Docs has no chat (although it does have group editing). On the other hand, Docs lets you see a list of all the revisions other users have made; Spreadsheets does not."
