Google Adds Creative Filter to Image Search
July 10th, 2009 | RSS Feed
Yesterday, Google announced the launch of a new feature on Image Search. This feature will help you find free images while giving due respect to the wishes of artists and creators. A few days, Google had made it easier for users to toggle the SafeSearch and prevent adult content from showing up in the image results. The new creative filter is just another addition to image search. It will allow you to discover images from across the web, which you can share, use and even modify. It also restricts your Image Search results to images which have been tagged with licenses such as Creative Commons as well as other licenses, like GNU Free Documentation license.
Here a screen shot of the filter:

The new feature will help artists who want their images to be found and reused across the World Wide Web – as per their own terms. Artists also have the option to license their images for general reuse, or for noncommercial reuse only. They can decide whether or not to give permission to people to modify or remix their images. After they have made their work available online according to these terms, Google Images will help users find and use it.
To use this feature, visit advanced image search page and click the "Usage rights" section. Under this section you can select the type of license you'd like to search. However, your search results will be restricted to images marked with CC or other licenses. Once you comply with the terms of the license you can start to reuse the image.
Although, Google added this filter through advanced URL parameters in the last month, but now it has officially included in the advanced search page. The new feature will make it easier for people to discover images while helping artists who have created their images available under these licenses to gain exposure for their work.
