Google Describes Meta Tags And Web Search!

With accurate meta tags, Google crawl, index and return your site in search results. Meta tags provide information to all sorts of clients, like browsers and search engines. The meta tags for the following HTML page will be interpreted by Google like this:

This tag provides a short description of the page.
<title>The title of the page</title>
This tag is often used together with the "description." The contents of this tag are used for the title in search results.
<meta name="robots" content="…, …">
<meta name="googlebot" content="…, …">
These meta tags control how search engines crawl and index the page.
<meta name="google" value="notranslate">
This is used for an automatic translation of a web page written in a different language. This meta tag generally does not influence the ranking of the page for any particular language.
<meta name="verify-v1" content="…">
This meta tag is used on the top-level page of a web site to verify ownership of a site in webmaster tools
<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="…; charset=…">
This meta tag is used to define the content-type and character set of a particular web page.
<meta equiv="refresh" content="…;url=…">

</HTML>
This type of meta tag is used to redirect a user to a new URL after a certain amount of time. As it is not supported by all browsers at times it confuse the user.
