Google Gives Orkut Data To Brazil

Google has decided to work with Brazilian Authorities by acknowledging with the court order to dispatch the data to Brazil, which will be helpful in identifying those Orkut users who are using the social network for child trafficking. Last year US Government also approached Google for the same, but they wanted detailed request for search behavior, whereas Brazil has requested for only the specific information about the individuals and group members in Orkut, using the system for carrying out illegal activities in Brazil.

“What they're asking for is not billions of page,” said Nicole Wong, Google associate general counsel, to the Washington Post. “ In most cases, it's relatively discrete- small and narrow.”

Google added in a statement that it has always been the intension of Google “to be as cooperative in the investigation and production of crime as we possibly can, while being careful to balance the interest of our users and the request from the authorities.”
