Google PageRank score 'Abstract'

Last month, we had reported that there was an update on PageRank. But now Google Webmaster discussion forum seems to be rife with a discussion that talks about the heading down hill value of Google PageRank.

The query was regarding the dropping PageRank of a webmaster's blog. Answering his query, however, the Google PageRank rep has in a way proved that there is yet another reason for us not to take the value displayed in the Google Toolbar too seriously.

Googler, Berghausen, said:

“Google does not contact webmasters back about the status of reconsideration reports. ” Further he added that, "The other thing is that the PageRank shown in the Google Toolbar is only updated periodically, usually every few months, and is only an abstraction from the constantly updated number our algorithms use. In the time between updates, any number of things can happen to the other sites that link to you, and the sites that link to them (and so on) so it can be hard to predict how the little green bar is going to move.”

This clearly goes to show that we must be paying attention to other things than PageRank because:

* It is only updated periodically.

* It is only updated every few months.

* It is only only an abstraction from the true PageRank score.

How PageRank works?

PageRank uses its vast link structure on the web as an indicator of an individual page's value. It then interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. However, it looks at considerably more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; for example, it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important." Using these and other factors, it provides its views on pages' relative importance.
