Google Social Search: A New Experiment on Google Labs
October 27th, 2009 | RSS Feed
Google team is conducting a new experiment named Google Social Search on Google Labs that will take social networking to the next level. The official Google Blog is also talking about the experiment that will help you in finding more relevant public content and that too from your broad social circle.
Google Social Search will make it easier for you to find blogs, status updates and tweets of the people you know at one place. For example, if you want to do a search for your friend's Los Angeles blog, you will be disappointed after not finding it on the first page of search results. What you will find are official or well-known social sites. But, Google Social Search will provide you with personalized results. You will find the public content from your contacts highlighted at the bottom of your search results. The moment you will search for “Los Angeles”, Google Social Search will show your friend's blog under the heading “Results from people in your social circle for Los Angeles” on the result page. You can also filter the results to view the content from your social circle by clicking on “Show Options” on result page and clicking “Social”.
The Official Google Blog has also posted a video to demonstrate the process:
Because all the information appearing as a part of Google Social Search is publicly published on the web, you can also search for it without referring to Social Search. The Google team has actually surfaced the content together at one platform so that you get more relevant results. The whole process includes building a social circle of your friends and acquaintances by using connections linked from your public Google Profile. The connection will revolve around people you follow on Twitter or FriendFeed. As the results will be specific for every single searcher, you have to sign in to your Google Account for using the Social Search feature. Those using Gmail will also get information about their chat buddies and contacts added in the mail. For people who use Google Reader, the development team has decided to include some websites from the subscriptions to be a part of your social search results.
Here's a video that will tell more about Social Search functioning and the choices or control you have over the content your share and see:
