Google to Comply with Indian Legal Processes, Will Hand over Orkut Information to Government!

In a new development, Google handed over information about an Orkut user to the Indian police who had allegedly posted some vulgar content about Indian political leader Sonia Gandhi. As reported by PC World, Google spokesperson said that it supports freedom of expression and is also committed to protecting the privacy of the users, but at the same time it is a law-abiding company and complies with local laws and legal processes.

Google gave the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the IT professional from Gurgaon, named Rahul Krishnakumar Vaid, to the Indian police who charged him under Section 67 of the country's Information Technology Act 2000, that relates to publication of obscene information in electronic content.

This a regular occurrence in India where Google and other internet companies are often asked to supply information about a person who tries to break the law of the land.

So the next time you wish to post something on the net, beware because the company may not be supporting your freedom of expression.
