Google To Digitize Select Books In Big Ten Libraries
June 11th, 2007 | RSS Feed
CNN reports “Google to digitize Big Ten school books” which follows just a mere two weeks after announcing it would “Digitize Ancient Indian Texts Among 80k Books!”.
Google's motive is to have “a shared digital repository that faculty, students and the public can access quickly.” In keeping with this, the Search Giant will digitize upto 10 million volumes from select collections from select libraries. The libraries include: Chicago University, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin.
“Lawrence Dumas from Northwestern Provost reasoned, "We have a collective ambition to share resources and work together to preserve the world's printed treasures". The committee said Google will scan and index materials "in a manner consistent with copyright law." Google generally makes available the full text of books in the public domain and limited portions of copyrighted books.”
Ivy League school Harvard University and California have already let Google digitize their libraries.

I think it would be a lot better than lugging around all those books around campus. A laptop is definitely lighter than a couple of textbooks.
