Google To Incorporate Panoramio's Technology Into Google Maps

In the official Google Blog John Hanke announces Google's planned acquisition of Spain-based Panoramio “that links millions of photos with the exact geographical location where they were taken”.

Panoramio is a community photos website that enables digital photographers to geo-locate, store and organize their photographs — and to view those photographs in Google Earth. Other users can search and browse Panoramio photos and suggest edits to the metadata associated with the photos. Panoramio also offers an API that enables web developers to embed Panoramio functionality into their websites.

Panoramio said, "This acquisition is a great opportunity for Panoramio uploaders to leverage Google's reach, increasing the exposure of their photographs to photophiles around the world and for viewers to choose from a larger universe of photographs as Panoramio becomes more widely known. We hope to close the acquisition in mid to late June of 2007."

The news comes just two days after Microsoft launched its newest, fancy 3D photo feature.
