Googlepedia? Google To Let Users Tweak Its Local Map Service
November 21st, 2007 | RSS Feed
Seattlepi reports that in order to "sell more local advertising online, Google will allow users to add and adjust information in its Internet mapping service and share the changes with viewers".
"Users now can move home and business address markers if signed in to a Google account, the company said in a written statement. Google also plans to allow them to add new points of interest and change business information at a later date.
Google, owner of the most-used Internet search engine, has tailored its services to local needs to help revive growth in ad sales. U.S. companies' spending on local online ads will almost triple to $2.61 billion by 2011, researcher Kelsey Group Inc. of Princeton, N.J., said.
The new system will work like online encyclopedia Wikipedia, where users contribute and edit entries. Google, based in Mountain View, Calif., will have moderators review the changes, and users can report inaccuracies or abuse."
