Economic Times reports that India's NIC (National Informatics Centre), will potentially receive help from Yahoo! or Google with whom they are in talks currently, for an improvement of over 5,000 websites' search engines.

The requirement for more advanced and hi-tech search engines arises as NIC hosts a multitude of data of national importance such as "results of all examinations such as CBSE and civil services, the online mobile phone directory of those customers who are part of the do-not-call registry, birth, death, caste, domicile and residence and land records".

Acknowledging the news, an NIC official said, "NIC is exploring the market for better search engine technologies. We are examining what Yahoo has to offer, and so far Google only supplies search engine hardware outside the country. We are asking Google if they would consider selling their products in India".

Currently working with Netscape, NIC is seeking a change as the former is too 'basic in nature'. An NIC source mentions, “The agreement with Netscape is working fine, but new advanced search engine technologies are being explored for which talks are on with both Yahoo and Google for its development.”

NIC is a branch of India's Ministry of communications and information technology which provides network to both the Central and State governments.
