Recently, USA Today's Jefferson Graham sat down with Google's Matt Cutts and asked him a 'question' that has been fiddling with numerous Webmasters' brains. The enigmatic question being, “How To Optimize My Website?”
So, Matt Cutts gave via the Jefferson post, 5 easy tips for Webmasters to optimize their websites. Here are the tips for all our readers and for everyone interested in optimizing their sites.:
- Spotlight your search term on the page: According to Matt Cutts, “Think about what people are going to type in to try and find you.” You need to make sure, the keywords that identify your product or services and area are mentioned at the top of the page to begin with.
- Fill in your "tags.": The tags in your website are very essential for visibility on Google. Google SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages) mostly show the title and description tag. However, in case you do not know how to use tags, then you can always use Adobe Dreamweaver, that allows you to fill tags in plain English.
- Get 'Inbound' Links: If you have websites that are known to be of high standards linking to you, then Google will pay more attention to your website, as it ranks websites on the factor of popularity.
- Maintain a Blog and Post Frequent Posts: Matt Cutts believes that blogging is a great way to add links and start a conversation with customers and friends. Mostly, blogging websites such as Google Blogger, WordPress and other free blogging tools help you in achieving more popularity. The investment it requires out of you, is your 'time'.
- Free Registration for Tools is Must: One of the most noticeable websites that provide free tools for website optimization is the Google Webmaster Tools. Once you sign in to this website, you will witness a great array of Webmaster tools, that would help you in the optimization process.
Now, a couple of days ago, I had posted a report on the Google Local Business Center, that helps the business owners to submit a site, so it shows up in local searches with a map attached. Many vistors these days, use Google, for their local searches and first few non-advertising results often are from Google Local. Therefore, to make your business and services more visible, you should definitely sign up with Google Local Business Center.
What You Should Avoid while 'Optimizing' your Website:
According to Cutts, in the exhilaration of optimization, many Webmasters stuff their keywords in a sort of a loop in their main page. Also known as 'Keyword Stuffing', it is considered to be a sin by Google and can leave your website banned from Google Indexing. Matt Cutts stated, “After you've said it two or three times, Google has a pretty good idea — 'OK, this page has something to do with this keyword. Just think about the two or three phrases you want to be known for and weave that in naturally."
While taking on the topic of blogging, Cutts took the time to give some advice to the rookies in the field of blogging. When posting something in the blog, the newbies should keep in mind that their post is all about their business. Matt said, “If I'm a plumber in Iowa, I may want to write about some of the strange things that happen to me on the job, or the five most common ways to fix a toilet. That kind of content can get really popular, and it's a great way to get links.” This would help the new Webmasters in attaining better rankings in Google.
