In a press release, Microsoft Corp has anounced that it is buying Medstory Inc. in a strategic move towards having a stake in the consumer health sector. Medstory Inc.  is a  private company based in Foster City, Calif, that provides information related to health issues to consumers and professionals.

According to a study conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, in 2006 , most people in the United States search for health information almost everyday. But again 22 percent of respondents feels frustrated due to lack of information related to health issues.

According to Dr. Alain Rappaport, M.D., Ph.D., CEO and founder of Medstory, “Instead of trying to force people to think in terms of the way a computer searches, we’re enabling computers to more intuitively conduct searches in the way that people think. With Microsoft’s global reach and experience, I look forward to this soon becoming a standard for online searches in health and medicine.”

Microsoft have formed a new division 'Health Solutions Group' where the employees of Medstory will be the part of the division. They will be looking after the product development and delivery.

“At Microsoft, we are focused on enabling people to make the best decisions,” said Peter Neupert, corporate vice president for health strategy and leader of the Health Solutions Group. “We were impressed with the ability of Medstory’s unique technology to organize and surface the most relevant online health content, which empowers consumers who are trying to find the right information about an important life event.”

The aim of Medstory is to help web users to search complex fields and provide efficient search solutions. Medstory was founded by Dr. Alain Rappaport, who also co-founded Neuron Data (later Blaze Software).

Great news for Medstory. It's worth mentioning a couple other vertical health search engines with useful, relevant search results…Healia and Healthline.
