Shhhhh….Google Quietly Deals With UK News Site

Scotland's Sunday Herald reports “Google reach deals with news websites” in UK so that the Search Engine giant can carry news from the news sites on their Google News.

According to the paper, "The deals are reputedly being kept strictly secret for fear that Google will end up having to pay for similar licences with all of the 4500 news services it carries on its news aggregator."

Google News only carries the Headline and the initial words of the news feature hence directing traffic to the news sites. Saying this, it claimed it wasn't in breach of Copyright laws. The News Sites retorted back saying most readers only cared about the headlines and beginning tid bits and not the whole feature. And so, Google was defeated in a trial case against the Belgian press. Agence France-Presse/AFP, won a lawsuit against Google followed by American rival news wire AP/Associated Press.

At the IFRA conference in Paris, Daily Telegraph editor Will Lewis said, "Our ability to protect content is under consistent attack from those such as Google and Yahoo who wish to access it for free. Companies such as Google and Yahoo are seeking to build a business model on the back of our own investment without recognition. All media companies need to be on guard for this. Success in the digital age, as we have seen in our own company, is going to require massive investment… [this needs] effective legal protection for our content, in such a way that allows us to invest for the future."

Good to learn that the Google Giant succumbs to pressures.
