Google in 1998 – History of Google

Googleplex is the headquarters of the renowned American corporation, Google. Offering over 50 diverse services and products, the company owes its success and popularity primarily to its search engine. It’s fascinating to realize that such a colossal enterprise had humble beginnings in a modest college room – that’s where it all started. Let’s have a look at Google in 1998.

History of Google in 1998

In 1995, two Stanford University students named Larry Page and Sergey Brin created a new computer program together. Their project was named BackRub and even though they didn’t have much money, it eventually became the early version of Google, which was based on the data collection system called PageRank. This means that using technology, we can track and record data online by analyzing the links that connect different websites.

It checked how many pages there were, checked if they were important, and connected them to the main webpage. Andy Bechtolsheim, who helped create Sun Microsystems, liked the students’ project and gave them $100,000 after seeing a sample of it in August 1998. The money helped them move from a shared living space to a garage in a town called Menlo Park in California. This garage became their first workspace.

Logo History

The logos of Google have been appreciated for their lively designs. The very first logo was created in 1996. There was a red word “BackRub” written on a hand. The first well-known multicolored logo of Google was only seen in 1998, when they changed their name from BackRub to Google. It was made up of blue, red, yellow, green letters that spelled “Google”, and there was also an exclamation mark.

Over time, the logo was changed multiple times. First, the exclamation point was taken away so that it wouldn’t look like other brands that also use it. First, the logo had the Adobe Garamond font, but it was later changed to Catull font, and eventually to Product Sans font. Ruth Kedar recommended creating logo versions that are mostly black but have bold and attention-grabbing elements in the center. However, Google returned to their usual colorful designs shortly after.

In 2015, they made a logo called the “G” logo that kept the same colors. It was used as a small icon to show certain qualities. Nowadays, people enjoy looking at Google’s doodles, which change depending on the day or holiday.
